Finding Advocacy Through Adversity: A Personal Story
A week before my spring 1L finals at Washington and Lee School of Law, my life took an unexpected turn.
My wife gave birth to our daughter (nearly three months premature) at 28 weeks and 4 days.
Balancing finals while spending every possible moment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (“NICU”) with our fragile newborn and living at the Charlottesville Ronald McDonald House was an immense challenge.
Despite the overwhelming circumstances, I persevered, maintaining (at the time) a position in the top quarter of my cohort.
Although life was chaotic, I was blessed to secure a research assistant role with Professor Joshua Fairfield. Amidst the NICU’s beeping machines, I diligently provided citations for his forthcoming publications, determined to keep pushing forward.
Little did I know, our real battle was just beginning.
On Father’s Day 2021, I received the best gift imaginable – our daughter came home. However, joy quickly turned to distress as we started receiving bills amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars for her NICU stay.
We had contacted our insurance company directly and followed their instructions for adding our daughter to our policy. But months later, they claimed we should have enrolled her through my wife’s employer’s HR department instead, leaving us to tackle nearly $300,000 in medical bills.
Overwhelmed by the prospect of financial ruin due to relying on incorrect guidance, I reached out to Norton Health Law for help. After receiving some guidance, I decided to tackle the situation myself, spending over 30 hours on the phone with the insurer, navigating hoops and escalating appeals.
After persistent efforts, they finally acknowledged their mistake and agreed to cover the NICU bills.
The entire experience was a wake-up call. I felt the frustration, fear, and helplessness that many face when navigating complex healthcare and insurance issues.
When fate later presented me with an opportunity to join the Norton Health Law, PC team, I jumped at the chance – I had found my calling to advocate for others in similar situations.
While I’m no superhero, every hero has an origin story, and this was mine. My personal journey fuels my empathy and drives my commitment to help those who are navigating medically and financially perilous situations.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and guidance if you need it, I understand and I am happy to help!
